Marjorie Minnie: Made in Britain
Yes! We are British Made and proud of it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a raving Nationalist, but I am a knitting geek, and the irony of studying for my Textile Design degree in a building that was formerly a thriving knitwear Mill in the heart of the Midlands was not lost on me.
When I began trading as Marjorie Minnie I made everything myself and sourced all my materials locally. As product demand increased I looked to outsource some of the processes, and there was no question that the manufacturing would stay in the UK, even if it put my products towards the luxury end of the market. Really? you might be thinking, is that a sensible business decision? but to me supporting the UK textile industry is a really important part of my business ethos.
So what are the benefits of manufacturing in the UK?
As a designer it means I can form relationships with the yarn producers and the people making my products, I can visit the factories and have complete control over the processes, knowing that the people who are working on my products are fairly paid.
As a consumer, you know that you are buying an authentic, original product made from the highest quality materials. You know where they come from and where they are made, not to mention the environmental benefits of a minimal carbon footprint. You are also supporting, due to our now weaker pound, what is a fast growing industry in the UK which can only benefit our economy.
So, yes, its a bit more expensive, but for me the aim of my business is to make high quality heirloom products that will sit as well in the nursery as they will in your living room. Investment pieces that will last a lifetime and grow with your family. Buy once, buy well and in our case, buy British.
